How to renew US Visa B1/B2 in Canada with a previous US Visa issued in your home country.
I made this post because I found a few information about renewing a US Visa in a different country of residence. I had a US tourist B1/B2 visa issued in my home country. I now reside in Canada and want to extend my US visa.
First, visit this website: https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/
Start an application.
Remember the special question and answer, and always use the same barcode or Application ID. Write it down or take a screenshot for your barcode number if it helps you remember.
Retrieve your application. Use the same Application ID/barcode number every time you access it.
Fill out the documents carefully.
For the question “Are you applying in the same country where the visa above is issued and is this country your principal country of residence?” I answered “No.”
After you fill out the form, you’ll receive a “Confirmation” page with your photo and the sentence “This is not a visa.” Make sure your barcode is always the same. I used one Application ID from the start, which is easier for me and less confusing. ---
Second, go to this website:
https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ca/niv/users/sign_in
After you receive the confirmation letter, go to that website and create an account. Fill out the form and prepare to pay. After payment, they’ll decide if you get an interview waiver (this will be stated in the email they send you). Then, choose where you want to drop off your documents via their courier. I chose to drop them off through Canada Post. They’ll send you instructions to print out and include with your documents for drop-off at the courier service. ---
I dropped off my documents on June 25, 2026. I received a tracking email from Canada Post on July 7, indicating that they’d be ready around July 9.
I hope this information helps. Good luck!
